Spider-Man films are now available on Disney+

After a few years, Disney+ is finally doing more to fill the Spider-Man-sized void in its Marvel film lineup. In the coming weeks, the streaming service will add the first tranche of Spider-Man films to its US catalogue. Tomorrow (April 21), the Sam Raimi trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man will be available, while Homecoming and Venom will be released on May 12.

Disney says that more of Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man film and television lineup will arrive in the United States later this year. While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already available in at least some countries, this means you’ll have to wait to watch No Way Home or Into the Spider-Verse without turning to other services (and in some cases paying for a purchase or rental).

The void has long been a source of frustration for Disney, especially since the launch of Disney+ in 2019. Sony has an indefinite film licence for Spider-Man, so long as a new film is released every 5.75 years. Sony retained the rights to Spider-Man’s solo adventures, requiring Disney to negotiate an agreement to use the web-slinger in Avengers films. To view the remainder of Spider-Man’s tale, you had to utilise Disney+ competitors such as Netflix (which has exclusive rights to Sony films).

Disney remedied this oversight in 2021 when it reached an agreement to gain access to Sony’s theatrical releases through 2026, as well as archival Marvel titles such as the Spider-Man series. As a result of this agreement, Disney+ no longer needs to fret as much about viewers subscribing to competitors in order to get their superhero dose.
